An exceptional late Medieval oak chest from the 15th century in nearly all original condition. Four deeply carved Gothic tracery panels are in the front on either side of an iron lock plate and hatch. The simple wide-style linenfold panels on the sides are the earliest form of linenfold decoration, developed in the 15th century but giving way to more complex styles of linenfold in the 16th century. The frame is made of thick oak planks and wide legs, typical of Medieval chest construction prior to lighter forms developed in the 16th century.
I purchased this chest directly from a private party in the north of France where it had been in the same family for many generations. Height 33", width 62", depth 25"
Condition: In very good condition and nearly all original. There is a replaced strip of wood on the side and back edges of the top, and a couple of small wood patches to the lower portion of the back legs and some very minor filling. No key. |
