A rare Spanish Renaissance walnut cupboard carved in bold relief, with two upper doors, two lower doors, and a center flip-down door revealing eight small carved drawers, the paneled sides with bold linenfold carving.

Unlike the common Spanish Vargueno and other types of desk furniture, the flip-down door of this piece is rare in that it was not designed to function as a writing surface when opened.   However, a few other early pieces with this arrangement do exist, see "Comparable Pieces" section, below.

Height 64", width 53", depth 16"

Condition:  The front and sides are almost all original, however much of the back boards and some of the interior structural boards are later.  The waxed finish has an aged appearance, with wear and losses to detail consistant with age, and the back and sides show woodworm damage to various parts (see photos).  The four doors retain three of the original locks (without keys), but the lock on the flip-down door is later (with a working key).

Comparable Pieces:

(1) The auction gallery of Giquillo et Associes, Paris, sold an early Flemish cupboard with a similar flip-down door on January 24, 2024 (for over 88,000 euros).  Copy and paste this link for photos:  https://www.giquelloetassocies.fr/lot/145671/23988135-exceptionnel-petit-meuble-en-chene-maille-sculpte-a?search=&

(2) The book, Encyclopedia of Spanish Period Furniture Designs, by Jose Claret Rubira, illustrates a Spanish piece with a similar pattern of deep, picture-framed squares centering various images carved in bold relief.  This style of decoration appears to be unique to Spanish furniture of the 16th century (see last photo included here).
